Earth Hour Schools Day

Today is ‘Earth Hour Schools Day’  for schools and childcare centres.

This is one day where we stop and recognise the way in which we choose to live, impacts our Earth.

We highlight the importance of sustainability and how we can play our part in the world to lessen the impact.

And children learn, that every little bit counts.

It will continue Tomorrow night, when  the world stops at 8:30pm to turn off  all lights for one hour.

Please join in, so our children can be proud contributors to our earth.

How we got involved

We felt it was the perfect opportunity  to get the children involved, especially considering the COVID-19 crisis we are currently navigating.

The educators banned together and decided collectively to roll out ‘Low Electricity Usage Day’.

This allowed us to  run a sustainable based program in the outdoor environment, for the entire centre.

How the day unfolded

The day followed a familiar routine for the children;

  • a morning group time;
  • story time together; and
  • morning meal.

Only difference being, it was all outside in our big yard.

During our typical ‘Activity and Learning’ part of the day the children were invited to engage in a ‘Recycled Construction’.

Tables were set up for this creative experience with recycled items and collage resources.

The children were encouraged to tap into their imagination and create a masterpiece in the inspiring outdoor environment.

Mind you, they didn’t need much encouragement, they raced to the tables, used their communication skills, shared resources and created artwork they were proud to show off.

Throughout these experiences the children developed a greater understanding of the world they live in.

They learnt about the  re-purposing of everyday items and what possibilities they hold, while developing an understanding of the impact humans have on environments.

That all from us, stay healthy and safe.
