Baby yoga is not yoga in the traditional sense it uses various poses to promote baby’s development as well as their health and wellbeing. Just like baby massage there are many benefits to attending a baby yoga class for parents and their baby’s.
We have incorporated baby yoga recently into our resilience program “Mindful Kids” to promote postural control, body awareness and relaxation.
6 Benefits To Baby Yoga
- Soothes and settles;
- Develops flexibility, encourages postural control and increases body awareness;
- Promotes relaxation techniques to use;
- Can help relive colic through a variety of stretches;
- Encourages language development through the use of songs;
- Creates a trusting relationship through touch, with Mother and baby and both mum & bub release endorphins promoting total well-being.
Baby Yoga Supports Brain Development
Baby yoga helps support bub’s two main sensory systems (vestibular system and proprioceptive )system. These are important in enabling movement and body control development.
- Sensory development and integration through movement;
- Co-ordination; and
- Balance.
Yoga Moves At Home With Baby
Itty-bitty ball
- Place baby on their back.
- Draw your baby’s thighs into their chest by bending their knees and pushing lightly on the front of their shins.
- Holding their ankles or shins, very lightly extend their legs back out to straight.
- Move back and forth for a few rounds, maintaining eye contact and engagement.
Bicycle legs
- Place baby on their back.
- Holding your baby’s shins or ankles, start to pedal their thighs toward their chest one knee at a time, bending at their knees like a bicycle. This tends to have immediate results, so don’t be alarmed if your baby passes gas in the process!
Alternating legs and arms
- Place baby on their back.
- Holding their right arm with your left hand and their left leg with your right hand, stretch the limbs apart lightly.
- Switch sides and repeat.
Songs performed with hand gestures
- Place baby on their back.
- Sing a song, such as “The Itsy-Bitsy Spider” or “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” that involves hand motions and observe your baby tracking your hands’ movements.
Flexible Bodies= Flexible minds, which cultivates a growth mindset and opens babies mind to endless possibilities.
That’s all this month from Miss Tash, Miss Tarsh and the Little Fish (Jalumm) children.
