Mindful Kids
Yoga fosters mindfulness which helps develop mindful kids.
We incorporate mindfulness into our resilience program to assist children in managing big emotions.
Being mindful is about being;
- Aware of our environment;
- The people in it; and
- Being aware of how we feel.
Awareness of our emotions gives us tools to stop and breathe, in order to deal with inner conflict. This allows us to have positive interactions with others.
It’s all about social and emotional development at this age and breath work is a key player in regulating our own feelings.
Apart of the breathe work, children gain enormous benefits from yoga.
Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness.
In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves.
Combined Yoga
Today’s session evolved into an outdoor experience after a suggestion from a child when I said we were going to do yoga.
The experience turned into inviting snakes and Sea turtles to join us outside for a combined yoga sesh, followed by a morning tea picnic.
I decided to follow the BABY YOGA book for this session. The children really engage in all the animal and nature poses.
We split into small groups to get the most benefit from our session.
Each child collected a yoga mat and picked out a spot in the outdoor yard and spread out their mat in a circle so they could watch me preform the moves and copy them.
I put on some relaxing music and then we began our session which involved flowing movement and holding poses to create awareness of our bodies.
We ended our session by laying on our backs with our eyes closed listening to the sounds of the environments.
Yoga presented to children on their level can help to counter the stress experienced by little ones living in a rushed world.
That’s all for now from Miss Natarsha and our Gowongs.
