Planting the Seed

The expression “Planting the seed” is used quite widely in the English language and spoken in several contexts.

Seeds are often associated with birth or personal growth but in the snakes room it’s all aboutĀ  planting a seed in the ground and cultivating it to grow.

Sowing of seeds and plant life cycle was our learning focus for September.

What better way to launch ourĀ  learning experience than with the very engaging, ‘Little Garden Growers’ show visiting the centre.

During the very informative show the children learnt about;

  • Plants and how to grow from them from seeds;
  • Watering and maintenance; and
  • Worms and insects and their importance in a garden.

Ā All the children enjoyed the show immensely and it opened up extended learningĀ  avenues for teachingĀ  individual elements.

Ā Gardening gurus.

With watering cans in hand the children took ownership of the kindy garden.

Every day the children watered the garden and witnessed the seeds sprouting and growing.

They quickly understood theĀ  importance of nurturing and persistence.Ā Their enthusiasm was contagious.

Using literacy to continue our learning, we read the childhood classicĀ  “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle.

The storybook features a caterpillar who eats his way through a wide variety of foodstuffs before pupating and emerging as a butterfly.

The children were fascinated with all the beautiful, bright colours of the butterfly, so we used this inquisitive moment and designed our own beautiful butterflies.

The children used great imagination picking out their colours to paint their butterflies.

Once our butterflies were dry and with the help of educators the children then practiced their cutting skills using the scissors to cut out their butterflies.

The benefits of starting projects, cultivating them and reaping the fruits of your labor, strengthens ambition and develops the habit of seeing things through.

It’s easy just to quit, but perseverance develops a grit mindset and builds resilience.

That’s all this month from Mr John, Miss Coby and the JomGwongs
