Last month, we’ve kicked off our sensory exploration for babies with the introduction of our first sensory trays in the Little Fish room. With the weather warming up, we’re taking full advantage of the opportunity to engage in sensory play with cold and frozen items. Our inaugural tray was a burst of color, featuring frozen reusable ice cubes and strips of sponge soaked in water and frozen. We’re excited to dive into various textures and themes as we continue to explore sensory exploration for our babies.

The Benefits of Sensory Play with Babies

– Boosts Mental Progress and Brain Connections

– Develops Knowledge, Data, and Understanding of the World

– Enhances Memory and Creativity

– Improves Motor Skills and Emotional Regulation

– Promotes Problem-Solving Skills and Critical Thinking

In the Little Fish room, repetition isn’t about laziness; it’s about recognizing how humans, including babies, thrive through repetition. Each time we bring out a sensory tray, we engage all our senses—touch, hearing, smell, and sometimes taste. These experiences spark conversations, introducing children to new words, sentence structures, and concepts like colors and shapes.

During our sensory exploration, we observed one of the children joyfully imitating colors as we played. Their enthusiasm underscores the immersive learning experience sensory play provides.

Our second sensory adventure featured a wet tray with cool water, bubbly suds, and sea animals. The children reveled in splashing around, exploring the slimy and squishy sensations of the soap on their hands. Even our youngest participants eagerly engaged in the sensory fun, as we placed them on the floor for easy accessibility during tummy time.

The Importance of Tummy Time

Tummy time is a crucial developmental activity that strengthens muscles and prepares babies for milestones like rolling, sitting, crawling, and eventually walking. Regular tummy time sessions, initiated as early as newborn stage, contribute significantly to a baby’s physical development and overall well-being.

Benefits of Tummy Time Include:

– Increased Muscle Strength in Neck, Shoulder, Arms, Back, and Core Areas

– Improved Ability to Control and Move Muscles, Encouraging Milestone Achievement

– Prevention of Positional Plagiocephaly (Flat Spots on the Head/Skull)

Making tummy time enjoyable and stimulating is key. From rolling a small towel to offering favorite toys within reach, there are numerous ways to make tummy time engaging for your baby. Consider incorporating sensory elements like water mats or activity mats to heighten the experience.

With creativity and interactive engagement, every tummy time session becomes an opportunity for growth, strength, and fun. Let your imagination lead the way as you bond with your little one, nurturing their development with each new experience.
