This week we had a super exciting day as the Sea Turtles made Sausage Rolls. The children got to put their new cooking sets to good use! These sets are all about getting children involved in the kitchen to learn new skills, learn about kitchen safety, build fine motor skills and to have lots of fun!!

Our cooking adventure was making sausage rolls and potato chips.

The children started by washing their hands, just like they always do before handling food. Then, they put on their funny hair nets and gloves to keep everything clean. They looked like real chefs!

The children got to assist in the process from start to finish. They all took turns grating the vegetables, adding spices and condiments, and chopping the potatoes up into wedges. The best part was then getting to mix all the ingredients together with their hands! The children made comments on how it felt squishy and gooey and cold, but it was so much fun!

After that, we put some mixture on to sheets of puff pastry, then rolled them up to make the sausage rolls. We then cut them into small portions and lined them on a baking tray, before giving them an egg wash to make them all shiny.

When the cooking was done, they couldn’t wait to try what they made. The room smelled amazing, and their tummies were rumbling with excitement. Finally, it was time for lunch! The children all sat down together to taste their delicious creation. The sausage rolls were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The potato chips were crunchy and yummy. They also had a little salad on the side to tie the dish together.

The Sea Turtles children can’t wait for their next cooking adventure!

Sausage Rolls

Ingredients:

  • 500g beef & pork mince
  • 200g sausage mince
  • 1 x brown onion, diced
  • 1 x zucchini, grated
  • 1 x carrot, grated
  • 1 ½ Tbsp tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup (60mls) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 x tsp dried parsley
  • Salt & pepper

Method:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees. Line two large trays with baking paper. Thaw puff pastry.
  2. Combine the mince, onion, carrot, zucchini, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder and parsley into a large mixing bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Divide mixture into 8 pieces.
  3. Lay a sheet of pastry on a flat surface. Cut sheet in half horizontally. Spoon 1/8 of the mince mixture down along the long side of one pastry half, shaping mince into a long sausage shape. Brush the opposite long edge with a little egg mixture.
  4. Roll up pastry to enclose filling, finishing seam side down. Cut into 6 short pieces. Brush tops with egg mixture. Place pieces, seam side down on prepared tray, 2cm apart. Repeat with remaining mince mixture, pastry and egg wash.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden and cooked through.

Children’s Comments:

“We did really good, it tastes delicious!”

“I can see the carrot we put in there.”

“I like the crunchy tops.”
